Big 5 walking safari in the Kruger National Park

Experience the African bush the way one it should be - on foot!

A walking safari offers a unique and rewarding authentic experience of the African bush.

Walking trails are limited to 8 guests guided by two armed rangers. The guides meet the stringent requirements of the South African National Parks and senior guides hold the highest guiding qualification possible in South Africa. The guides will share their wealth of ‘bush culture’; the identification of animals, trees, grasses, insects, birds, the medicinal uses of plants, local folk lore and basic tracking & survival skills.

Day One Depart Johannesburg at 07h30 and travel east towards Belfast and Nelspruit. After a short refreshment break we drive down the Schoemanskloof mountain pass into the Lowveld and to the Capital of Mpumalanga, Nelspruit. It is now only a forty minute drive to the Phabeni gate and we enter the Kruger National Park. Your safari stars now, as we drive to the camp which will take over an hour look for the many animals which make the Kruger Park home. Arrive at Rhino Post Safari Lodge in the early afternoon. After enjoying a cold welcome drink on arrival, time to settle it to your room. Meet your ranger while enjoying snacks and sandwiches then late afternoon is "safari time" you board an open game tracking vehicle to explore the African Bush looking for some of the many species that make this area home. The ranger will point out and explain the many animals found, and hopefully you will be lucky enough to see the elusive cats. Just before sunset the ranger will stop and sundowner drinks accompanied with tasty snacks are enjoyed in the bush. The drive back to the lodge will be a night drive using spot lights to look for the elusive nocturnal animals. Once back at the lodge meet fellow guests at the bar area for a pre-dinner dring and then dinner is served in a traditional "boma". After dinner get an early night to prepare for the next day’s walk.

Day Two Early wake up and cup of coffee before setting off on a trail to Plains Camp and arrive in time for a hearty brunch with your luggage ready and waiting in their luxury tent. After brunch, the heat of the day will be spent at the camp, enjoying a rest or the plunge pool overlooking the plain & waterhole, which is often host to zebra, buffalo, giraffe, elephant, rhino and lion. High tea is followed by an afternoon walk and sundowners and then back to camp for a sumptuous (well-earned) dinner.

Day Three - Sleep in the bush! Another early wake up and cup of coffee before setting off on a trail and the guides will share their experience of the diverse areas situated within the proximity of the camp for two to three hours and then return to the camp in time for a hearty brunch After brunch, the heat of the day will be spent at the camp, enjoying a rest or the plunge pool overlooking the plain & waterhole, which is often host to zebra, buffalo, giraffe, elephant, rhino and lion. High tea is followed by an afternoon walk, after a comfortable walk arrive at the platforms in the early evening carrying a lightweight rucksack containing a change of clothes, a pillowcase, a sheet inner for the sleeping bag and refreshments. After hanging up mosquito nets, fly sheets (only if necessary) and preparing beds (yes! we do encourage our guests to be included in every aspect of this unique interactive experience of the bush) sundowners can be enjoyed on the platforms that also overlook a waterhole. While dinner is being prepared for our guests on an open fire, they will enjoy sounds and senses, heightened as they share the wilderness at night, while being safely guarded by our observant guides. The rumble of the elephant passing by or the roar of the lion at the nearby waterhole, are the only noises that might disturb guests in this peaceful wilderness.

Day Four Guests will enjoy a light snack after which they will depart back to the camp for a hearty brunch. After checking out we can start the long drive back to Johannesburg, or drive to a nearby game lodge for a night of luxury or we will take you to Skukuza airport for a flight to Johannesburg and then Cape Town.

Big five bush walk

Nothing is predictable in the bush therefore each safari offers a potentially new experience.

After an introductory brief on the ‘do’s & don’ts’ of bush walking safaris, the guide will structure the trail taking into account the fitness level of the group and any special requests. Departures are before breakfast and again in the late afternoon to avoid the midday heat, with the average duration between 3 and 4 hours. Walks may be lengthened or shortened depending on the group’s desires and fitness levels.

On a walk you will follow tracks, feel the tingle of your own senses, and hear the beating of your heart as you edge closer to a herd of elephant. Are you up for it?
