Mongena Main lodge and Litle Mongena  

Mongena is situated in the northern area of the Malaria Free Dinokeng Game Reserve

Mongena Private Game Reserve is nestled within the malaria-free northern region of the 18,000-hectare Dinokeng Game Reserve, a mere 40-minute drive from Pretoria and a 60-minute drive by tar road from Johannesburg in the province of Gauteng, South Africa.

All members of the Big Five (elephant, rhino, leopard, buffalo, lion) roam free across the reserve. Mongena’s private concession of 8,000 hectares offers an authentic exclusive safari experience where only registered safari vehicles are allowed with no access by the public.

The reserve’s name, Mongena, is derived from the Boekenhout or Transvaal beech tree (Faurea saligna), which is indigenous to the Dinokeng area. The Mongena private game lodge has resident zebra, nyala and springbuck who contribute to the reserve’s charm and have become its trademark. At Mongena Private Game Reserve, we are dedicated to providing our guests with a unique and unforgettable experience immersed in the beauty of South Africa’s natural environment.

Mongena Main Lodge accommodation comprises of 24 air-conditioned ensuite rooms (single, double/twin or family accommodation) ideally positioned amongst beautiful indigenous landscaped gardens and sleeping a total of 61 guests in sharing accommodation. Each Mongena Main Lodge air-conditioned chalet has a shower, coffee/tea-making facilities, room safe, hairdryer, flat-screen television with satellite TV and a room turn-down service at night. Five of the 17 twin rooms and all six family rooms offer bathrooms that include bathtubs and showers. The main lodge also has a wheelchair-friendly twin room with paraplegic bathroom facilities. Wi-Fi is available throughout the Main Lodge.

Twin Rooms

We have six well-appointed twin rooms in Mongena Main Lodge, each sleeping two comfortably in twin beds. Each of these twin rooms has a bath tub and shower. We’ve got 11 shower-only twin rooms to choose from in Mongena Main Lodge. Each room sleeps two people comfortably on twin beds or a king-size bed.

Family Room

Make unforgettable family memories in one of our family rooms at Mongena Main Lodge. We have five family rooms available, each sleeping four people on twin beds with two downstairs and two upstairs and one family room sleeping 5 guests. All family rooms have bath tubs and showers with a seperate toilet. (4 sleeper & 1 x 5 sleeper)

Little Mongena

Tick glamping off your bucket list!

Little Mongena Tented Camp comprises 10 en-suite luxury tents on a full-board basis including 2 wildlife activities per night stay. Get ready for glamping experiences you’ll never stop talking about! Little Mongena is a luxury tented camp looking onto the pristine Mongena Dam. Enjoy morning & late afternoon Big Five safari drives and relax in-between activities at the infinity pool. Each tent features a tea/coffee-making facility, air conditioning, and en-suite bathroom with a shower.

Little Mongena is an intimate little lodge with lots of character.  No other Gauteng game reserve offers an authentic, world-class glamping experience this close to Pretoria! Bring your tribe – the lodge can accommodate 20 guests in total ideal for an intimate private birthday party or special event. The unfenced camp does not allow children under 12 years.

Little Mongena is nestled on the banks of the picturesque 30-hectare Mongena Dam. The camp features communal dining facilities and an infinity swimming pool. Each luxury en-suite tent includes air conditioning. Little Mongena is an excellent spot for bird watching enthusiasts. The full board Little Mongena package (excluding drinks with meals) includes two exciting wildlife activities per night stay. Guests have a choice of morning and/or late afternoon safari drives, sunset cruises or guided bush walks.

Guided Safari Drives

Looking for those authentic early-morning or sunset safari experiences? You’ll be in the safe hands of our qualified field guides in our vehicles. Don’t forget to bring your binoculars and camera! One drink per person from a standard cooler box and a snack will be served during the drinks stop.

Guided Bush Walks

Experience the wilderness as our ancestors did. Join us for exciting on-foot bush adventures for groups of 4 – 8 people. Dust off your hiking boots, we’ve got a walk for you! Concerned about safety? All guided bush walks offered by Mongena Private Game Reserve are led by experienced, qualified trail guides. This is one of our safari experiences not to be missed!

Boat Cruises

Watch the sky turn to a romantic purple-blue whilst listening to the African Fish Eagles cry at sunset, on our relaxing afternoon boat cruises on our exclusive 30-hectare dam. One drink per person from a standard cooler box and a snack will be served on board. Additional drinks are available on a cash basis.   This activity replaces one of the guided game drive activities on the full board accommodation package and is subject to availability at point of booking.

Bird Watching

The wetlands around the dam offer superb bird watching. With over 300 bird species being recorded throughout the Reserve, you are guaranteed to find your lifer! Specialist birding drives are offered at regular intervals.

Bass fishing

Take your team of rod-wielding fishing enthusiasts on an adventure outing of bass fishing fun! Explore the Mongena Dam as you catch and release some of our bass fish that are sure to challenge even the most seasoned line casters. For resident guests only.
