To complete your Safari in South Africa, Go SAfari will arrange a four or five day safari to the wildlife rich Chobe in Botswana, either from Johannesburg but a good option is to go from Victoria Falls as this is only a 45 minute drive away.

Experience the Chobe elephants

Experience the Chobe elephants at the Chobe National Park and River safari

Experience Chobe National Park on a Wildlife Game & Boat Safari

The ideal way is to spend 4 days in Chobe and then go to Livingstone (Zambia) to experience Victoria Falls for another 3 days. There are cost effective daily flights between Johannesburg and Livingstone.

A Chobe river safari is an amazing way to get close, really close to African wildlife Chobe National Park is in northern Botswana, by size it is the third largest park in Botswana and covers some 11 700 square kilometres. Chobe has some of the greatest concentrations of wildlife found on the African continent, not least of which are the +- 60 000 head of elephant which is reputably the largest elephant population in the world.

The great attraction of the Chobe is you have the opportunity to go on a river safari and a traditional game drive safari each day, and to get close to an elephant in a boat and vehicle is awe-inspiring. Another stunning experience is to spend a few days on a luxury house boat and follow the animals along the Chobe and Zambezi Rivers.

At the confluence of the Chobe River and the Zambezi Rivers four Countries meet, one of the only places in the world which this happens. Zambia, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe all meet there.

Where to stay on a Chobe safari?

There are a variety of lodges/hotels to stay in on the Chobe River in the town of Kasane but Go Safari has selected Elephant Valley Lodge as our lodge of choice. This lodge is away from the town and in the Kasane Forest which is adjacent to the Chobe National Park, so you will enjoy a true African bush experience and the waterhole the lodge over looks is constantly being visited by elephants and other animals.

A great option is to stay on a luxury houseboat. A slow cruise along the Chobe River will give you the opportunity to view the park from a floating lodge and watch wildlife from the comfort of your cabin or from tender boats.

River safaris on the Chobe River and safari drives in the Chobe National Park

Enjoy the river safari in the morning and the game drive in the afternoon. During the morning the river is distinctly less busy with fewer boats. This also permits a longer experience, assuming that sightings keep us busy, and we do not have to cut the trip short to get back before sunset. It does also permit a greater length of the river to be explored.

In the afternoons we have found that the Chobe National Park is conversely less busy and we are able to enjoy a sundowner along the river to capture the sunset on camera. It is also during the late afternoon that game becomes most active. It is also the only lodge that offers a short night drive in the Kasane Forrest as you have to be out of the Chobe National Park by night fall.

This is a Malaria area.

Malaria is found throughout the Park, and you are strongly advised to take anti-malarial prophylactics before, during and after travel to the area.

Some of what to expect

Many types of animals seen including the fairly rare puku and Chobe bushbuck. 460 bird species, including raptors, vultures and inland waterbirds.

The Chobe National Park offers extreme contrasts and a variety of wildlife experiences within the confines of one park. It covers a variety of vegetation types and geological features that vary from the almost tropical habitat of the Linyanthi swamp to the severe, desert-like landscape of the Savuti, and from the lush Chobe floodplain grassland to the deep sands of the Brachestegia woodland.

The Chobe River actually flows both ways. In the dry season it flows into the Zambezi River and when the Zambezi River is in full flow it "pushes" the Chobe back up stream.

Chobe is game-viewing country, particularly in winter (March - July). November - December sees the migration of herbivores between the Chobe River and Savuti Marsh (and back between February and April). Game-viewing and bird-watching cruises on the Chobe River. The Chobe's perennial waters rise in the northern Angolan highlands. Chobe has four physically and vegetationally distinctive areas; the barely discernible dry Savuti Channel, Linyati, Serondella and Nogatsaa.
